New-build private house at the end of Grade II listed terrace
The site for this project is located in Peckham and was a small end of terrace derelict plot. The adjacent four storey terrace is Grade II-listed and formed the basis from which the scheme was developed.
The house is a modern interpretation of the historic architectural language of its neighbours. Whilst the façade was ordered to reflect the composition and rhythm of the entrance door and the windows in the adjoining terrace, the façade of the house itself was designed as a contemporary modern element.
This concept was carried through to the use of materials where the tone of the existing brickwork was reflected in the colour of the house’s timber panels and ‘voids’ of the windows similarly in the glazing system. Pre-patinated copper panels were then used on the side elevation which faced Burgess Park, to compliment the greenery around the site, in particular the trees to the front and rear of the building.
The project was proposed for a Civic Trust Award in 2002.
